I first started working with Gold Training just over two years ago, it was my first job out of school other than the usual hospitality part-timer. I remember my first day like it was yesterday, I left home nice and early so I wouldn’t be late, I was listening to my go-to playlist – Monster Dance Hits (go check it out on Spotify if you haven’t already), my expectations of the day went something like this.
Buy the boss coffee, set up my desk, eat lunch and understand the procedures and processes I would learn to live by.
Turns out, I made the coffee wrong and little to my knowledge within a year I would be the one implementing/designing those procedures and processes.
Now, two years on and I have completed my traineeship and taken on more versatile roles throughout the business. Although It’s difficult to capture what I do in a day, as each day is so different and my to-do list is everchanging, I have attempted my best to outline ‘A day in the Life of an Administrator.’
Review my to-do list for the day and prioritise the list
Flag any emails that require extra time to resolve
9:00 – 10:30
This is my most productive part of the day, I’ll usually spend it reviewing documents and data, fixing any errors and doing reports for senior management.
10:30 – 11:30
This is the perfect time for any meetings, it breaks up my day and makes the time just before lunch go a little faster
I’ll spend this time adding to my to do list and actioning items from the meetings
Ahh, my usual lunchtime. I have 30 minutes for lunch, and I find it is best spent outside on the grass eating my lunch.
Others are also out for lunch, so I am usually covering phones or answering enquiries, mind you, I do this all day.
I get in a bit of a slump around this time as I’m coming off the high from lunch, so I like to jam a lot of my phone calls and organising for courses in this time. Although I am constantly using my organisational skills throughout the day, I quite enjoy this time as I get to show off these amazing skills I learnt through my traineeship, BSB30415 Certificate III in Business Administration, check out the course flyer.
If I’m lucky and it’s quiet in the office, I’ve made a couple of social media posts, scheduled some ads in, worked on a marketing plan, uploaded content to our website or written a blog – go check out some of our other blogs here.

One way governing bodies seek to do this is by providing several financial incentives to employers who employ an apprentice or trainee. 1. Payroll tax exemptions
Employers who employ a trainee may be exempt from payroll tax; employers are also able to claim a payroll tax rebate that reduces the payroll tax amount.
2. Reduced wages
Apprentices and trainees are hired often at a reduced rate of pay, which gives the business the chance to train them effectively before they attract full wages. In part, this will assist you with the cost of allocating them time on the job to complete their course requirements, as their productive business hours are paid at a lower rate too.
3. Commencement, recommencement and completion incentives
When employing a trainee, employers may be eligible to claim an incentive at the time of commencement, recommencement and completion. Payments are dependent on the employee’s eligibility for traineeship funding, which should be checked by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre before commencing the traineeship. This can usually be done by making contact with an Apprenticeship Centre and providing the trainee’s full name and date of birth.

Make sure the times you set are reasonable for you and times that you can commit too. If you’re a night owl set sometime at night or if you like to wake up in the morning and get everything done early set the time in the morning.
Block this time out by trying to avoid booking appointments or seeing friends in this designated time. By committing to the schedule, it will help prevent procrastination and keep you on track to meeting those goals.
3. Find a quiet study space with limited distractions
Find an area that is free from distractions like a TV, noises, or other people. A quiet space can help your concentration, meaning you can reach that SMART goal of yours sooner. Allowing quiet time to focus can be achieved by finding somewhere in the house when the kids are asleep or when family or housemates are out of the house.
It is important to limit distractions such as social media; one text back can quickly have you headed down the deepest, darkest depths of the ‘internet blackhole’ that is YouTube. Since your completing your online course it may be hard not to check that notification, so go ‘cold turkey’ and log off all your accounts and close all unnecessary tabs or windows in your browser. - therefore reducing the temptation to check out your Facebook or those perfect funny animal videos (a favourite of ours from YouTube!).

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, that’s why you have a trainer! The difference between being proactive and asking the question as soon as you need help and waiting a couple of days before you ask may mean that you reach that SMART goal a week later. Remember, your trainer wants to help you succeed!
5. Relate real life experiences
It is often easier to answer a question if you have personal experience. The question may not directly relate to your situation. However a lot of the time there are similar elements. You will answer the questions twice as fast if you can use relatable experiences when answering questions.
6. Reward yourself
If you passed an assignment the first time or received a high mark on your quiz, in fewer attempts, treat yourself. Speaking from experience, there is nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment. It is easier to be motivated when you have something to look forward to at the finish line.
It might be surprising to you, but consider telling someone about your great work - it is a trait of basic human nature that people are proud of their ability and to impress others - and it does work to create motivation seeing acknowledgement from others.
